CHESANING (WJRT) -- (11/23/09)--It was anything but a quiet weekend in normally quiet Chesaning. Police say there have been at least a dozen break-ins since Friday.
The latest one came Monday morning when a car dealership was broken into. The crime wave has police looking for suspects and business owners wondering how they can protect their property.
"Not a way to start a Monday," said Mark Ervin.
The first thing Mel Ervin Ford employees in Chesaning Township had to do when they got to work was survey the damage.
Burglars busted up vending machines and even tried to get into the office safe. They were using a pry bar on it. They wanted to get in but the safe did its job.
While there were plenty of cars to take or damage, it appears the crooks were just after money.
"It could have been a lot worse," Ervin said.
"Our window was busted out," said Amanda Hasse with M-57 Surplus.
M-57 Surplus got hit as well.
They tore open the door and bashed in the other one," said Lisa Ziola with ZCI Feed Sales east of Chesaning.
Ziola remembers when her daughter-in-law called with the news. These three break-ins are part of a string of crimes that hit inside the village of Chesaning and the surrounding area.
Homes were robbed as well, and investigators say among the items taken were TVs and jewelry.
Chesaning Police Chief Stacey Wilbur says residents have to be extra cautious as the holidays are here, and the economy is still struggling.
Business owners are thankful no one was hurt, but they worry that this could happen again.
At this point there are no suspects in the estimated 12 break-ins.
