Live horse racing will go on in Genesee County

Monday, November 23, 2009

(11/23/09)--All bets are back on. Last month, some said live horse racing in Michigan could be thrown off course, but late in October, the State House approved a bill that restored some needed funding.

Sports Creek Raceway in Swartz Creek calls it a Trifecta -- the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the startup of live horse racing, and job creation.

Chris Locking is preparing once again for live horse racing at Sports Creek Raceway. A racing shutdown could have caused the state to lose upward of $7 million and would have put thousands of people out of work.

But Locking is a betting man.

"I was quite confident that that wouldn't happen," he said.

Pamela Clark from Davison had been out of work for a year but the raceway reprieve helped her get hired two weeks ago.

Sports Creek will be the only track in Michigan to have live horse racing starting Friday.

Their season runs into early February.
