Michigan Adoption Day held Tuesday

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -- (11/24/09)--The Tuesday before Thanksgiving has become a special day for hundreds of families in the state.

It was Michigan Adoption Day.

There was plenty of emotion in a number of courtrooms across the state Tuesday, including one in Midland County.

"The name of the adoptee is Dekoa Christie Kessler," said state Supreme Court Chief Justice Marilyn Kelly.

Six children officially received new names in Midland on this Michigan Adoption Day.

"Our court has encouraged all courts across the state to make it a special day in their particular area," Kelly said.

One by one, the families came before Kelly and Midland County Probate Judge Dorene Allen to hear their adoptions were final.

"All of these families have chosen to make this public, because normally, adoptions are confidential proceedings," Allen said.

Nicholas Urbani, who started life in foster care, now has a mom and dad and two siblings. And 9-year-old Chelsey Moeller's adoption was four years in the making.

Amy Smith picked up Jillian from the hospital when she was only six days old. And the only thing that seemed to upset 9-month-old Jillian was when she left the arms of her adoptive mother.

Just minutes later, she was sound asleep, as if there was not a worry in the world.

In all, there were 225 adoptions finalized in the state Tuesday.
