FORKS, Wash. (AP) - Vampires are good for business. You have probably never heard of the small town of Forks, Washington. But fans of the "Twilight" series of novels about undead teenage heartthrobs know all about the place. And they want to see it. Marcia Bingham, of the Forks Chamber of Commerce, says they had a wonderful summer, thanks to the vampire novels. And the visitors don't mind the rainy weather. Bingham jokes vampires won't come out if it's too sunny.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Steve Lake is still going to college -- hundreds of them. Yesterday, he visited his 500th college, Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. It all started in 1984 when Steve and Caroline Lake were on their honeymoon in Boston. They stopped to visit some of the area's well-known schools. And they've kept it up. But Caroline admits she'll often sleep in while he hits two or three campuses. Steve Lake is a pit boss at Caesars Palace Casino in Las Vegas. He says missed out on campus life because his Montreal college was crammed into a single office building.
VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) - It's green, alright. But it's not cash, nor is it good for a burger. A McDonald's worker in Vero Beach, Florida, called 911 to report a customer was trying to pay for his meal with pot. Deputies say the drive-through cashier provided a description of the car. Indian River County deputies found the car and report finding pot in it, too. Shawn Pannullo is accused of being the driver with the munchies. He's charged with possession of cannabis and posted $500 bail. A Sheriff's report doesn't say what the suspect ordered at McDonald's or if he managed to buy his unhappy meal with something other than pot.
LUDINGTON, Mich. (AP) - Veronica Taylor still has high-flying dreams at age 78. She's taking flying lessons. The Michigan senior says learning to fly is something she always wanted to do, but it seemed so absurd. Taylor's not sure when she might be able to test for her private pilot's license. But she's already taken off with an instructor alongside. Her flight instructor tells the Ludington Daily News that Taylor is as good as any student pilot he's ever had.
ESTERO, Fla. (AP) - A 13-to-zip loss would have been bad enough. But Estero High lost to Naples High by 13 touchdowns. The score in last Friday night's high school football match-up was 91-0. Estero defensive line coach Pat Hayes tried to lighten the mood. He said he didn't even know 91 was a multiple of seven. Naples led 70-zip by halftime. Estero's coach Rich Dombroski says his counterpart did nothing wrong, like running up the score, in the lopsided victory. But Dombroski adds his guys couldn't do anything right.
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (AP) - Mark Ciptak is doing more than putting up a yard sign for the McCain-Palin ticket. He's named his daughter Sarah McCain Palin. But he might get some flak at home. The Elizabethton, Tennessee, man says he ignored the name he and his wife had picked out, which was Ava Grace. Ciptak says when he filled out the paperwork for his new daughter's birth certificate, he substituted Sarah McCain Palin. The blood bank employee for the American Red Cross says his wife will still take some more convincing. He tells the Kingsport Times-News he hopes to get the word out about the McCain-Palin ticket, thanks to little Sarah McCain Palin.
