Bizarre News -- Antarctic Whiskey

The stories may be strange, but they're true

It's Scotch on the rocks -- and then some.

ANTARCTIC WHISKEY
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - It's Scotch on the rocks -- and then some. Two crates of Scotch whiskey have been frozen in Antarctic ice for a century. Soon, a team of drillers will attempt to reach the vintage booze. The McKinlay and Co. whiskey was shipped to the Antarctic by British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, as part of his abandoned 1909 expedition. Whyte & Mackay is the group that now owns the McKinlay brand. The company wants a sample of the vintage Scotch in an attempt to recreate the original. Workers from New Zealand's Antarctic Heritage Trust will try to reach the crates in January.

BAREFOOT RUNNING
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Michael Sandler has sole -- bare soles. He's the co-founder of the Barefoot Running Club in Boulder, Colo. An in-line skating crash in 2006 left Sandler with multiple broken bones. After 10 surgeries, Sandler could barely walk and doubted he would ever run again. Now, Sandler runs more than 100 miles each week barefoot. He says running shoes are the problem, not the answer. He maintains running barefoot decreases the wear and tear on the rest of the body. He tells a Steamboat Springs newspaper (Steamboat Pilot & Today) that barefoot running will be the next big fitness movement.

UNCLAIMED CASH
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - You wouldn't think basketball legend Larry Bird would be hard to find. After all, he is the president of the Indiana Pacers. But Bird is among the well-known Hoosiers who have money waiting for them in the state's unclaimed property fund. Bird is due 80 bucks. Rocker John Mellencamp has more than $800 waiting for him. Even some state agencies have dough held by the state. The Indianapolis Star reports the Bureau of Motor Vehicles has 100 bucks in the unclaimed property fund. Fund officials note they can't track down everyone, even the famous people.

MONSTER BAND
ALLEN, Texas (AP) - It seems most everything is bigger in Texas -- even the marching bands. On Friday nights, the Allen High School marching band is 527 musicians strong. The school has a 39-member color guard. And the drill team puts 72 students on the field. Officials at a number of organizations, including the University Interscholastic League, say they've never heard of a bigger band. The Dallas Morning News reports it takes 18 school buses to haul the contingent and three big trucks to carry all the instruments.

SONIC MISTAKE
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (AP) - Sarah Ellison wears a uniform, but she's not a car hop at a Sonic drive-in. She's a police officer in Elizabethton, Tenn. Authorities report a drunken driving suspect mistook Officer Ellison for a Sonic waitress. A caller to 911 reported a woman driving a car nearly hit several other cars before pulling into the Sonic parking lot. The Johnson City Press reports the DUI suspect handed the officer a $20 bill -- but didn't get fries with her order. Police say officers also found drug paraphernalia and many bottles of prescription medicine in the car. Suspect Veletta Newman is due in court in April for a hearing.

OVERDUE BOOKS
PHOENIX (AP) - A long-ago high school student wants to make good on a couple of way overdue books. A high school librarian in Phoenix says the former student has returned two books checked out some 51 years ago. There was a money order along with the books, for $1,000 to cover the fines. Camelback High librarian Georgette Bordine says the former student doesn't want to be named. At two cents a day, fines would have totaled $745. Bordine says the long overdue books are being returned to shelves, while the money will be used to buy more books for the school library.
