MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -- (11/14/08)-- ABC12's Money Source team is hard at work helping you keep a little extra money in your pocket.
During the Great Depression, movies were a great escape for people. They still can be a great escape, and in come cases, you don't have to spend a penny to enjoy one.
As part of our month-long series on savings, our Money Source team has some great options for you.
At Birch Run's Cinema Hollywood you can always find a bargain. You just have to know when to look.
Every day until 6 p.m. everyone gets into Cinema Hollywood for $5.50.We found matinee prices even cheaper at Courtland Center Cinemas in Burton. Admission is just $4.50 for everyone until 6 p.m. After that you'll only pay $6.50 for adult admission.
At Fenton Cinemas, full price adult admission is only $6.75.
Try NCG Trillium Cinemas in Grand Blanc Township on any Tuesday. Most tickets are just $5.00 each.
If you don't want to pay at all, check out your local library. Most libraries now offer free movie rentals.
In Genesee County there are over 65,000 DVDs to loan. "You can check up to six for seven days per library card," said Davison Branch Senior Librarian Mary Higginbottom.
"About once a week or so we'll go to the library and check out the videos," said Scott Dennis. "They have quite a selection."
Doug Trim loves it. "Handy, free, six at a time. You can't beat it!"
"For the month of October we have had over 80,000 circulation for DVDs. That's how many DVDs checked out," Higginbottom said.
Books are being borrowed at a record rate too. They are still the most popular item in the library, according to Higginbottom. "Everything just increased when the economy started changing."
Libraries in Saginaw have seen quite an increase in foot traffic, too. During September alone there were 1,600 more visits compared to the year before.
"Economy. It's the economy that's bringing them in," Higginbottom said.
At the Genesee District Library branches, they say bring it on.
All you'll need is a library card. It's free and takes about five minutes to fill out the necessary forms.
