Bill announces he has cancer

FLINT -- I want to send this personal note to my ABC12 family, both in and outside of the station.

Editor's note: March 12-Bill's surgery is a success. His doctors say Bill came through with flying colors and he should live to be 150.

March 14-Bill is now resting comfortably at home. He sends his best to all and thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

I want to let you know that starting Thursday night, I will be away from the anchor desk for an extended period of time. Part of the time for some R&R and quiet time with my family; the rest will be to treat a medical problem.

I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. It has been diagnosed early and my health care experts say my prognosis is excellent.

I share this very personal news with you for one reason. Beginning Thursday night, we here at ABC12 hope to begin increasing public awareness of what is one of the most common forms of cancer in men. In the weeks ahead, with the help of my newsroom peers, we will keep you informed of my treatment and recovery.

Much of that information -- including occasional postings from me -- will appear here on abc12.com.

But that's putting the cart way before the horse. For the moment, I ask for your prayers and support, not only for me and my family, but for other men and their families who are facing this challenge every day.
