Magna International workers fear job cuts

Thursday, October 05, 2006

(10/05/06)--Some Mid-Michigan workers were concerned Thursday that their paycheck may soon see a big cut.

They work for Magna International, an automotive supplier. And workers say pay cuts are coming their way.

Workers say they have been told concessions are coming, but the union and the company are not saying much about it.

They work at Intier Automotive in Brighton, the interior division of Magna International. About 350 people work at that plant, and 65 percent of those workers are from Genesee County.

They are members of the UAW Local 599 in Flint.

The president of Local 599 said he didn't have any information about this situation, only saying they do plan to have contract discussions with the company in the near future.

Workers and their families say they'll just wait and hope the rumor of a 20-percent pay cut isn't true.

He says they already increased their medical benefits co-pay and he understands that things like that need to be done. He just thinks slashing wages is unfair.
