GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (WJRT) -- (11/13/06)--Monday brought an update on the Grand Blanc Township family who lived in a home two years before discovering it had a basement.
New tests show the home is dangerous, forcing the family to move right away. Initially, the Davis family said it was "kind of cool" they found a basement in their home they didn't know they had.
But now it's a nightmare because the basement's full of water, which has spawned another surprise: toxic mold.
Two years after they bought their home on Woodsdale Drive, the Davis family discovered a secret the previous homeowners never told them about.
Rather than fix a leaky basement, they cemented over the steps, covered it with a piece of wood and carpet and sold the home.
The Davises discovered a trap door and after some major drilling, the basement they never knew they had. It was full of water.
They pumped it out. It filled up again. A new test on the house shows that water is causing unhealthy living conditions.
The report recommends the Davises and their three kids move out for at least a year while the mold is removed.
The Davises have noticed they've been getting sick a lot. Now while they pay for the place, they have to quickly find and pay for another place to live.
They also have to buy new beds, furniture -- almost everything.
The Davises say an inspection of the home just before they purchased it showed no problems. But a new report from a professional mold expert shows indeed there are big problems.
They are suing the previous homeowners.
