MICHIGAN (WJRT) (WJRT) -- (11/19/06)--President Bush is calling for patience when it comes to Iraq. But Michigan's Senator Carl Levin, soon to be chairman of the Senate Armed Services committee, disagrees that putting more troops there is the way to succeed.
"That sends exactly the wrong message to Iraqis that somehow or another there's a military solution," he said. "Our military leaders say there's no military solution in Iraq. There's only a political solution in Iraq. We've got to force the Iraqis to reach that political solution. Fewer troops, beginning in four to six months, to get an international conference, a time to reach some conclusions, to give the Iraqis an opportunity for four more months or six more months to reach a political settlement. For heaven's sake, don't get deeper into Iraq. Start getting us out of Iraq."
Senator John McCain says more U.S. troops will speed up the war there and help train Iraqi security forces.
