Year of the Woman?

Friday, January 05, 2007

(01/05/07)-- A historic milestone has taken place in American politics. For the first time a woman is the Speaker of the House of Representatives and second in line for the presidency of the United States.

Nancy Pelosi, a Democratic Congresswoman from California, was elected yesterday to the top leadership role in the House.

She is the first woman to ever hold the position, and is now the most powerful woman in America.

Pelosi's rise to power in Congress, combined with the fact that there are now more women in Congress than ever before, has many people asking if this might be the year of the woman.

We spoke to some high school students today about women in power and politics and there was no real consensus on that question.

But they all agreed that the tide is shifting.

The students are part of a law and society class at Grand Blanc High School.  They have been keeping a close eye on the 110th Congress and its new leadership.

Teacher Gary Smith leads the class. "Nancy Pelosi is considered to be fairly liberal, and so I think the students that had trouble with it was more with her politics than her gender."

"I am pushing for her to do good and be a good representative," said Jordan Dickinson.
