MID MICHIGAN (WJRT) (WJRT) -- (05/24/07)--In just the past couple months, at least three Mid-Michigan teenagers have been killed while behind the wheel.
One state has adopted a new law to ensure the safety of teens on the road. The penalties are a whole lot tougher than in most other states across the country.
Could Michigan be next?
Michigan has a graduated license process for young drivers, but many people we spoke with say it's nothing like the new law that recently went into effect in Massachusetts.
When we show teenage drivers and parents of teenage drivers the new safe teen driving law adopted in Massachusetts this year, we tend to get the same response: "Wow."
The law lays down tough penalties for drivers between 16 and 18 years old.
For example, a first-time speeding offender could have their license revoked for 90 days, pay a $500 reinstatement fee, complete training and retake the written exam and road test.
And that's just one violation.
Of the four new rules, driving recklessly would strip a young driver of their license for 180 days, plus fees. Massachusetts officials say the law is working.
They have already seen a sharp decline in teen violations.
"The kids probably take this very seriously," said Maureen Halligan.
"Six months with no driver's license? And I have to believe that some of these $500 reinstatement fees ... parents are making them earn that."
According to national statistics, car crashes are the leading cause of death of teenagers in the United States.
Michigan follows a graduated license process, but many parents -- even teens -- say they believe what's been implemented in Massachusetts should be done here.
In addition to following the law, a driving instructor says it's important for parents to instill in their teen the rules of the road.
