FLINT (WJRT) (WJRT) -- (08/16/07)--Around 180 Flint postal jobs could move to Pontiac. The United States Postal Service is proposing the move as part of a consolidation plan.
Workers are not happy about this proposal. That's why they held an informational picket day, saying this consolidation would be unnecessary.
However, a postal service representative says consolidation is about being efficient.
The U.S. Postal Service is proposing to consolidate some processing work in Flint with a new plant under construction in Pontiac. Why consolidate? Too much space and too little mail.
People are using e-mail to pay online for their bills so we're not getting as much stamped mail. The postal service has proposed solution to the problem.
They want to process most of Flint's mail in Pontiac and move 180 Flint employees there are well. The plan is not going over well.
Even Congressman Dale Kildee was walking the line against consolidation.
"It's also a matter of getting your mail on time," he said. "Mail is going to be slowed down. They know that and admit that."
The city residents will have a chance to voice their opinion and hear from the postal service in the fall before a final decision in made.
One thing to note is, if the proposal goes through, the Flint main branch will remain open. We'll keep you updated.
