Kettering adding pre-med program

Thursday, May 22, 2008

(05/01/08)--What it did for engineering it'll now do for medicine. Thursday morning, Kettering University announced an innovative pre-medicine program.

It's a long-awaited expansion many students say will give them the advantage.

A campus known for cars could soon be known for health care. Students who finish will graduate with a minor in biochemistry and the training to succeed.

Stacy Seeley, a Kettering professor, will head up the new program.

"In general, the medical profession is becoming more technical, and so all of our students are getting a background which helps them compete," Seeley said.

It'll help students like David LeCronier.

"We really needed a little extra help," he said.

"I think you're going to see a huge trend in engineers becoming doctors because of the advancements in technology," said Jena Miller.

A high-tech lab and a new biochemistry department set the stage, but closed-door conversations took more than six months.

With curriculum in place, local hospitals may benefit as well.

The pre-med program started in this current spring term.

By the way, medicine isn't a foreign concept at Kettering. More than 900 alums have headed off to medical school after graduating from the university.
