MOUNT PLEASANT (WJRT) -- (10/23/08)--A Mid-Michigan casino has announced buyouts for some employees, and layoffs could be coming, too.
The Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Council is asking more than 100 of its employees at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort to take that voluntary buyout.
The buyout announcement is located on the tribe's Web site.
Tribal leaders say the same economic conditions affecting the country and the gaming industry are taking their toll on the Mount Pleasant casino.
The tribal chief says its government must reduce costs to match business volume. The move is being referred to as a "voluntary" buyout for its full-time workers.Tribal management will have the final say on which departments, positions and workers take the buyout.
Employees looking to retire early have until next Friday, Oct. 31, to take the buyout.
If the program doesn't meet the required reduction needed to offset costs, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe will make the decision to lay off workers and restructure its staff.
Officials add the layoffs are needed to stay competitive and offer their four-diamond service to its guests.
We have been in touch with tribal leaders, but no one was available for a on-camera interview.
Again, employees interested in taking the buyout have until next Friday, Oct. 31, to accept the deal.
