LAPEER COUNTY (WJRT) -- (12/16/08)--Tuesday brought the first look at the future of education in Lapeer County. Next fall, students will fill the halls of the newly named Rolland-Warner Middle School.
Two women behind the school's new name toured the construction site.
As more than 100 construction workers pieced together the parts of Lapeer County's newest school Tuesday, Doris Rolland and Abi Warner just tried to take it all in.
When finished, the school will bear their names.
"It's very thrilling for us," Warner said.Warner's husband Ronald was a long-time teacher and administrator.
"It's an honor to him, and it's certainly going to be a pride to our family," Warner said.
Doris Rolland walked the halls for years.
"I was former principal of this school," she said.
But since then, education has changed. That's why this renovation centers on flexible, high-tech training.
"This is not a simple matter. This is a collaboration of many, many, many wonderful people," Rolland said.
Though it's not finished, it's a hit with the namesakes. When it's done, it's sure to be the same with students.
"This facility has the hardware to set children off in the right direction in learning," Rolland said.
The project at Rolland-Warner will cost $17.4 million, funded by last year's bond. Seventh graders will start at the new school next fall.
By the following school year, the district will revamp Zemmer Junior High School and open its second middle school for the district's sixth, seventh and eighth graders.
