Planned Flint engine plant contracts cancelled

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

(01/27/09)--All construction contracts for the new engine plant planned for Flint have been cancelled.

The $370 million, state-of-the-art plant was to be built on Van Slyke Roadin order to produce the new fuel-efficient engines for the Chevy Cruze and the Chevy Volt.

Tuesday night, GM spokesperson Sharon Basel confirmed the construction contracts were cancelled Monday but says GM's commitment to the city of Flint hasn't changed.

Basel says right now the company is looking at all possible options and scenarios. She says that may include using existing structures in Flint.

Basel says GM is committed to building that engine in Flint but would not speculate about what this move would mean for the timetable.
