BURTON (WJRT) -- (05/29/09)--Mid-Michigan residents packed the pews of Holy Redeemer Friday as the parish's school prepares to close for good.
The school may be empty soon, but for now, it's still full of memories.
The sign out in front of Holy Redeemer Catholic School says it all. The school is closing after 63 years, and Friday there were plenty of people on hand to say goodbye.
It's the hallways filled with generations of memories that have alumni young and old filling pews for one last school mass before the school shuts its doors for good.
Bill Addinson came back to Holy Redeemer Friday for the first time since he left in 1957. He was hoping to run into former classmates.Friday's farewell brought four lifelong friends back together, while the memories are rich, the school's budget was not.
The decision to shut down the school was made by the Diocese of Lansing early this year -- a true sign of the times as many Catholic schools around the country face similar issues.
And it's prayers, hugs and memories former students and faculty take with them, long after the hallways at Holy Redeemer fall silent.
The school closes on Friday, June 5.
