CORUNNA (WJRT) -- (07/08/09) -- A local county prosecutor is at the center of a drunk driving accident investigation.
Shiawassee County Administrator Margaret McAvoy says county prosecutor Randy Colbry was involved in a two-vehicle crash yesterday at the corner of M-21 and Vernon Roads. She says alcohol may have been a factor in that crash.
No charges have been filed in this case, but word is quickly spreading through this quiet community. Colbry is not at work today as investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened yesterday afternoon.
"Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. The Shiawassee County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash, and has been in contact with the attorney general's office," McAvoy said.
Colbry has been the prosecutor here for years. In the past few months, he's drawn fire from the community by charging several popular doctors with illegally prescribing pills.County officials say, yesterday, just before 3 in afternoon, Colbry was involved in a two-vehicle crash at the corner of M-21 and Vernon Road in Venice Township.
The other driver was a 55-year-old man from Owosso. He refused medical treatment at the scene.
But McAvoy says Colbry was taken to a local hospital. She says that's where police conducted a blood alcohol test. The results of that test are still pending.
We spoke with several witnesses this morning who were doing some roofing work nearby.
Here's how Chris Koerner described the crash. "We heard some squealing tires and a big bang. I just thought a tire blew on the road, but then, next thing I know I saw a car just speed off this Vernon Road right here."
County officials have not confirmed that Colbry is under any investigation for any possible hit-and-run accident. But we do hope to get more information from the county sheriff later this afternoon.
Once the sheriff's department finished it investigation, this will all be turned over to the Michigan attorney general's office.
