BAY CITY (WJRT) -- (07/12/09) -- A Bay City neighborhood grieves after a 13-year-old boy was killed in a weekend accident.
The boy was riding his bike when he was hit by a car just a few blocks away from his home.
The accident happened at the corner of Wenona and Salzburg. The driver was 85. Dustin Wieszciecinski, 13, was on the bike.
"I really want to be strong right now for my father. He is really heart-broken about it," said Dustin's brother, John.
Putting on a brave face, 13-year-old John Wieszciecinski talked about losing both his twin brother and best friend."Whenever I wake up in the morning, he is there," he said. "I won't have as many people to hang out with now. I'm going to miss him."
Family and friends gathered Sunday at Dustin's home on Salzburg, just a few blocks from the accident scene. "I think everybody's still a little bit numb. We cry, we laugh, we talk about it, we gather pictures of him. You know, doing whatever we can to support each other," Dustin's sister, Candice Ahrens, said.
Police say the 85-year-old driver was going south on Wenona, stopped at the red light and then tried to make a right turn onto Salzburg at the same time Dustin was crossing on the his bike.
"Upon our arrival, there were bystanders there performing CPR on him, trying to save him," said Bay City Police Sgt. Will Badour.
Dustin was taken to the hospital where he died.
Since then flowers have been placed at the scene of the accident.
Dustin's twin brother has some advice for teen on bikes this summer. "Really you just gotta watch these roads, 'cause they're really crazy sometimes. People get out of work and they just speed down, and it's just really dangerous," John said.
"You probably want to wear a helmet. Dustin wasn't, though."
The 85-year-old driver has not been charged. The case will be turned over to the Bay County prosecutor's office for review.
