FLINT (WJRT) -- (09/08/09) -- Two Catholic schools in the Flint area closed this summer. While it appears some of the students have transferred to public or charter schools, some have made the move to other Catholic schools.
Students at St. Pius X Catholic School look eager to learn as the new school year gets underway. Sprinkled among the students are several new arrivals from Holy Redeemer school, which closed in June.
Sherry Johnson attended Holy Redeemer when she was a student, and says St. Pius has a certain atmosphere. "This school, to me, had the feel that was most like what Redeemer was like."
While it costs about $5,000 a year to send her two children to St. Pius, another mom says she never seriously thought about public schools after the closing of Holy Redeemer.
"Money doesn't mean anything when it comes to your children's education. You want the best for your child, the best you can give them," Judy Jandreski said.Overall, attendance at St. Pius is up 19 percent from a year ago.
"We do more than teach subjects. We teach them to have wisdom so they'll make good decisions in the future. And I think that's why parents choose to stay in Catholic education," St. Pius X Principal R.J. Kaplan said.
At Holy Family in Grand Blanc, the new principal says attendance there has remained steady at just over 500 students.
