Soap box derby racers take over Chevrolet Ave.

FLINT (WJRT) -- (09/13/09) -- A group of Flint college students transformed Chevrolet Avenue into a racetrack on Sunday for a charity soap box derby.

Students from Kettering University race the custom soap box cars in a third annual event which raises money for Saint Jude's Children Hospital.  Students sold T-shirts and accepted donations during the event.

The race was also part of Kettering's Alumni Association Bulldog reunion weekend.  Racers started from the south end of Chevrolet and took their cars to the bridge across the Flint River.

Organizers say it's a great way to have fun and help a good cause.

"St. Jude's doesn't turn anybody away and we do what we can to support them with our fundraising efforts," said senior Erin Stemmer.  "Flint has a tradition of having a soap box derby and years ago, we thought it would be a fun idea to try and bring it back."

A lot of work goes into race day.  Students say it takes the entire term to set it up.
