Police seek suspects in storage break-ins

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

(10/21/09)--Thieves targeted a Shiawassee County storage facility, and investigators say nearly 100 units were broken into.

Michigan State Police think it all happened sometime between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning.

The business hit was the Durand Mini Storage located on North Saginaw Street just off of I-69.

It is one of the largest thefts that Michigan State Police troopers in Corunna say they have seen in a while. They have a big job ahead working with all the victims, but they have few leads to catch the suspects.

Sometime in the middle of a 17-hour time span Monday overnight, police say thieves broke the locks on at least 90 storage units, maybe more.

And they broke into three trailers at the Durand Mini Storage, stealing various items from inside.

Right now, investigators are in the process of contacting all of the storage owners, so they can figure out exactly what's missing from each unit.

Troopers from the Lansing and Flint post were called in to help in the investigation.

A manager at Durand Mini Storage says they're in the process of repairing some of the doors and adding new latches to units to keep all of the property secure.

Michigan State Police detectives say there are no surveillance cameras at the site, which makes it difficult to crack this case. But they know for sure this wasn't a one-person job.

There are so many units at the site that if you have one and haven't been contacted by investigators, they want to hear from you.

Also, if you know anything or may have seen anything late Monday into Tuesday, give the Michigan State Police Corunna Post a call.
