FLINT (WJRT) -- (10/26/09)--It's taken double the planned time and costs 25 percent more than expected, but the Rowe Engineering Building in downtown Flint is just about ready to open.
Those involved in the Rowe project admit to its challenges, including the partial collapse in 2007 that added some $5 million onto the price tag.
But as they watch the finishing touches go into place this week, developers are finally seeing the outcome they were hoping for when they began this project three years ago.
Seven of the eight two-story loft apartments that rent from $1,000 to $1,600 a month have already been leased.
Who will be moving in appears to be a unique mix older professionals like a judge, a doctor and older business owners, as well as young entrepreneur and even one family. On the second and third floors, more than 100 employees with Rowe Engineering will start moving in to the downtown office that surrounds a four-story atrium that mixes some of this historical brick with the modern aesthetic.
