Flint Township learns more about biogas plant

FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -- (11/02/09)--Flint Township residents Tuesday learned more about a new biogas plant that will go up in their community starting next year.

The CEO of Swedish Biogas International held a town hall meeting with those who live near the site.

The plant will be located at Flint's Wastewater Treat plant off Beech Road.

Residents that live near the facility now say they've experience issues with the existing plant before. And they don't want to go through them again with this new project.

When complete, the facility will take human waste and turn it into energy -- a first-of-its-kind plant in the United States.

Many of the residents are concerned about the environmental effects of the plant.

The CEO assured there won't be any additional smells coming from the plant, and that the Flint River will be protected.

However, James McClung fears this cutting-edge technology could take a toll on the value of nearby neighborhoods.

The project is still in the early stages, and construction should begin next year.
