New FedEx sorting facility open at Bishop Airport

Tuesday, November 03, 2009

(11/03/09)--Flint's Bishop Airport is growing. A new FedEx sorting facility is officially open and city leaders say it will save jobs.

The project is part of the airport's larger intermodal hub project. The planning took about 15 years. Cutting the ceremonial ribbon took about five seconds.

It's a $14 million warehouse with about 80 employees. FedEx will sort packages and transfer them among trucks and aircraft.

It's built to handle 3,000 packages an hour. FedEx used to be housed on the east side of the airport. Now it's moved to the west side of the complex.

The new facility will not immediately create jobs. But airport officials expect FedEx to expand quickly.
