GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -- (11/06/09)--Despite a directive signed Thursday by the Flushing Township supervisor, laid-off police officers were not being put back on the job Friday.
That word came from the township's interim police chief, who says he needs time to look into the terms and legality of the decision.
At issue in this case, as it has been for some time in Flint Township, are the layoffs of four township police officers.
Actually, the vote was to lay off only one full-time officer because of budgetary concerns. But because of contract language, part-time officers had to be laid off every time a full timer was laid off.
As it turns out, the four board members who voted for the police layoff became the target of a recall. They survived that recall election on Tuesday. Then, last night, Township Supervisor Donald Schwieman, before heading out on a trip to New York, sent a letter to the interim police chief saying he was ruling on the union's grievance from the summer and determined there was enough money now in the general fund savings to re-instate the laid off officer.
Acting Township Chief Don Ganson said it is because of these concerns and because the laid-off officer still needs to understand the terms of the reinstatement that he will be making no changes in Flushing Township's police schedule for now.
