MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -- (11/06/09)--While nationwide the unemployment rate has hit double digits, many communities in Mid-Michigan have already seen unemployment numbers that high.
Many local agencies are trying to turn that around by using federal funding to create green jobs.
We have heard the term "going green" over and over again -- not only in trying to diminish our dependence on foreign oil, but also to create jobs.
Former Flint Mayor Mike Brown is now the head the Flint Area Reinvestment office. He says more federal funding is available create green jobs.
The office has many responsibilities, including finding that federal funding.Grants are available through the Department of Energy to create green jobs in areas like weatherizing homes. The reinvestment office would help find they funding.
Then they would partner with other agencies like Career Alliance to provide training for those jobs.
So far nearly $10 million in grants has been secured.
Some of these training programs have been designed, but the funding has not been approved.
