SAGINAW (WJRT) -- (11/06/09)--On Friday night's "20/20," pop singer Rihanna unveiled how domestic violence changed her life.
She spoke out for the first time since her former boyfriend Chris Brown attacked her last February.
Her high-profile story allows local communities to focus on youth programs to stop violence before it starts.
Eighth graders at Bridgeport Middle School are among their peers in a unique leadership class with a focus on preventing domestic violence.
Saginaw County's Underground Railroad sponsors the program aimed at building responsibility, character and self worth into each student.
They meet once a week, and students drive the discussion. Group leaders say the kids have already admitted to having witnessed some acts of violence.
Karen Tesch co-teaches the class. She hopes to reach these young teens by showing them how to attract healthy relationships focused on respect rather than fear.
Underground Railroad has a variety of school programs to help teenagers with making healthy choices.
