MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -- (11/07/09) -- It may be hard to believe, but the holiday shopping season is here. This year, the economy has retailers and security officials on high alert.
The holiday shopping season is underway in Mid-Michigan with Christmas trees, ornaments and even Santa Claus noticeably present at Genesee Valley Center.
In the midst of a weak economy, retailers and shoppers say they need the head start.
Retailers are hoping for a merrier holiday shopping season after weak sales last year. Meanwhile, police worry the weak economy will lead to more crime.
Crime tends to increase during the holidays and mall parking lots are prime targets for criminals.
"People are going to have to be aware," said self-defense instructor Terry Cocking. "We're going to have more security at the malls."
To help increase awareness, Cocking is teaching a parking lot safety class. He says he fears criminals will be even more desperate during an economic slump.
"They've increased dramatically," he said. "I think around Christmas time we're going to see a big change."
Cocking's advice includes never park in a dark area, always have your hands free and know basic self-defense.
There are three upcoming classes scheduled this season. The next one will be on November 17 at Advanced Ranges in Burton.
