Luncheons for the homeless

FLINT (WJRT) -- (11/10/09) -- In recognition of National Homeless Awareness Week, several hundred people across Mid-Michigan are getting a free, hot meal today.

The 10th annual Homeless Luncheons are underway.

There are luncheons just like this one also happening at the North End Soup Kitchen and Eastside Mission.

Another will take place at 5 p.m. at the Brennon Community Center.

More than 500 people will be served today.

They'll not only get a meal, but they'll also take with them bags of things like hats, gloves, personal care items, food and water.

Anyone who is homeless or about to be homeless can attend.

Organizers say this is about more than supplying food and necessities. It's also about talking with the homeless, and finding out how agencies can provide better service for them.

A recent report by the Michigan State Homeless Management Information System found that there are close to 3,000 homeless people in Genesee County alone.
