GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -- (11/26/09) -- Forget the turkey. Here in Mid-Michigan, it was all about the mud at the "Mounds" on Thursday.
If you're not familiar, the Mounds is an ORV (off-road vehicle) practice area in Genesee County and Thanksgiving is their busiest day of the year.
"We're expecting a bigger crowd this year just because the weather is cooperating," said Nancy Edwards. "Knock on wood. It's not snowing and it's not icy."
Just muddy. And that's exactly the way they like it.
"We love it," said Clifton Graydon. "As you can see, there's quite a crowd here. We all love it."
Some came as early as two hours before the park opened. Genesee County Parks officials say this is the only place in this immediate area where people can legally ride their off-road vehicles.
Trucks, trackers, dirt bikes, quads and even cars take rides around the trails, rocks and pits.
As for that traditional Thanksgiving Day meal? By the early afternoon, the crowd seems to thin a bit, but some like Dan Eigner push that meal off just one more day.
"Because of this occasion," he said of postponing his holiday feast. "Whole family is out there."
If you didn't get a chance to get out there today, the Mounds is open year-round on Monday-Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until sunset and from noon until sunset on Sunday.
