DURHAM, N.C. (AP) (WJRT) -- (08/20/06)--The "Freshman 15" is the 15 pounds - more or less - that some students gain along with a new life away from home and close to the school cafeteria.
Now some universities are taking steps to help freshman eat healthier.
Among the tools being offered to university rookies are interactive workshops to help plan meals in the dorm and steer away from late-night binges.
Other university food gurus say campus cafeterias are improving their menus, too, and now offer salad bars alongside the pizza and mystery meat.
A nutrition expert at Duke University says lots of teens "don't have a clue of what they're not supposed to eat." And that can pack on the pounds.
Another University of North Carolina expert says the habits that students build in the first months of school tend to carry them through the rest of their campus years.
