GRAND BLANC (WJRT) -- (08/08/09) -- The high school football season is right around the corner and Grand Blanc has some of the best talent in the entire state.
On Friday, two of those Bobcats made verbal commitments to play at major Division I colleges.
After a record breaking season as a wide receiver at Grand Blanc High School, college football coaches started to take notice of Tony Jones. Twenty-one scholarships came Jones' way, making for a difficult decision.
"At first, I was just eager for the offers and they came in February," Jones said. "I just continued to get offers and then I realized that I actually have to pick a school. That's when it got harder for me. I went to several college campuses and I just feel like Northwestern was the best one for me."
After choosing Northwestern over Michigan State, Stanford and a host of other schools, Jones is eager to make the same plays for the Wildcats that he's been making for the Bobcats the past two years."We run the spread offense here at Grand Blanc and I'm very familiar with that type of offense," he said. "I've had great success in the spread offense and Northwestern, they definitely throw the ball a lot and that's the type of offense I'm looking for. I'm just ready to get there and make big plays."
Jones still has one more year to make big plays on Friday nights, which means big things for Grand Blanc. But he isn't the only reason the Bobcats are expecting a big season. Two-way star Gabe Martin will be back too, fresh of accepting a D-I offer to play linebacker at Bowling Green.
"I'm real excited. It's a big weight lifted off my shoulders," said Martin. "Now I can just focus on my senior season, just to keep everything pointed toward Grand Blanc football, so we can do what we need to do to be successful this year. We have a great team and great coaches. I just hope everything falls into place for us."
