Troy shooting suspect caught in Bay County

Monday, April 09, 2007

(04/09/07)--A man believed to have shot three people at a Troy office building was apprehended in Bay County Monday afternoon.

Troy police Lt. Gerry Scherlinck says the suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Anthony LaCalamita.

One person was killed. Two are being treated for their wounds.

The shooting took place around 11 a.m. Police thought LaCalamita was still inside of the office building and searched it from top to bottom.

Around 12:30 p.m., a high-speed chase was reported in southern Saginaw County. The car involved, a 2007 Ford Fusion, matched the description of the suspect car at the scene of the Troy shooting.

The driver of the car, believed to be LaCalamita, led police on a chase on northbound I-75 through Saginaw County. The car finally came to a stop just over the Bay County line near an I-75 rest stop north of Crane Road.

Police took the driver into custody at that point.

LaCalamita is back in Oakland County, and so are authorities. Police received a warrant to search his Troy apartment, and right now they are looking for answers.

Authorities spent more than an hour searching through LaCalamita's Troy studio apartment.

But it's what they found in the dumpster that raises suspicion: an empty box to a brand-new gun and at least another two empty boxes of shell casings.

All appear to be consistent with the shotgun used in a deadly morning office shooting.

LaCalamita was fired from his job at an accounting firm last Friday. Police say he returned Monday morning with a gun. Workers in the building described the scene as pure chaos.

"They had cordoned off the building," one witness said. "I pulled in the back and found out that somebody had been shot on the second floor."

Madeline Kafoury, 63, of Gordon Advisors, was shot dead and two of her male colleagues were taken to a local hospital suffering gunshot wounds.

The main suspect is former employee LaCalamita. He got in a car and from Troy headed north on I-75.

He was spotted in Genesee County, then led police on a high-speed chase that eventually ended near the Saginaw County/Bay County border.

Police right now are uncertain if all three victims were targeted, but they say there appears to some purpose to his actions.

A man from Dexter tipped local authorities after seeing LaCalamita driving erratically on northbound I-75.

LaCalamita will likely be charged Tuesday morning.

Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell held a press conference Monday afternoon. He described what was found in the car during the arrest.

"At the point of arrest, we seized a 12-gauge pump shotgun and three live shells," he said.

The suspect upon his arrest was subdued and said nothing.
