(06/17/06)-- Video tapes are so 2005! Pure Digital takes the camcorder to the next level without breaking the bank!
The Pure Digital Point & Shoot Video Camcorder is a digital video camera that stores everything on internet memory. It's a little bit bigger than a deck of cards and has an LCD screen on the back along with navigation buttons. It fits easily into a coat pocket. You can do the shirt pocket thing but it's a tad heavy for that. It runs on 2 AA batteries and has both a TV output and a flip-out USB plug.
Operation is a snap. Hit the power button and push record. It's literally that easy! The device will begin recording your first video clip. When you're done, push the record button to stop. There is enough internal memory to store 30 minutes of video. You can not add memory to the camera. A new clip is created every time you start and stop recording. There is even a digital zoom that can be used while recording and is surprisingly smooth. When you're done recording, it's time to watch it!
Instant gratification is fun and you get exactly that with this camera. You can watch your videos instantly on the great-looking LCD. Video looked clear and smooth. I am very impressed with the quality of video. You can also push the button to flip out the USB plug and then plug that into your computer. The device shows up as another drive on your computer. You can either run Pure Digital's software to view and email your videos or you can simply drag and drop the 3ivx encoded avi files. Your third option is to plug the included cables into a TV and watch your videos directly from the device. There is 1 final option, which is dropping the camcorder off at a CVS or Rite-aid to have your video burned onto a DVD. That'll cost you about $10 - $20.
The video looks good, not amazing, but good. Once it's blown up onto a TV screen you can see that it's digital. You won't get the same quality that we've come to expect from mini-DV tapes but it is good enough for most people. The dip in quality is made up by the versatility. You can email these videos to friends with just a few clicks! For most people who only use their camcorder once or twice a year, this is an amazing option.
Price is key here! The Pure Digital Point & Shoot Camcorder is sold at Target and Costco stores for $130. Again, you won't get the same quality as you would with a $500 mini-DV camcorder but you also don't have to fork out as much cash. This guy slides into your pocket and makes shooting home videos a snap. You will find yourself shooting MUCH more video than even before because it is so much easier than a typical camcorder. Moms, Dads, this camcorder is a must!
