On the Trail: Hunting Safety

Sunday, July 27, 2008

(07/27/08)--We talk all the time about passing the hunting tradition on to younger generations, but actually doing it is another story.

A lot of people wonder what an appropriate age is to get kids involved in shooting.  It's based on individual preference and depends on the youngster and the adult supervision.

The child has to be big enough to pull back the string on the bow and they have to be big enough to understand the issues of gun safety.

It's a great time to build a good foundations with your kids on how to safely handle guns, discuss their purpose, and what not to do.

You want to make it a fun time.  It doesn't have to be a long session and when the kid starts to get bored then stop it and do it again in a few days.

And if you don't have a kid, borrow one of the neighbors.  Tom likes to borrow his grandson Cole.  It's just important to get kids involved in a safe and responsible and handling of firearms and bows and arrows.
