Ill. soldier dies in Afghanistan

  

July 30, 2009 (WASHINGTON) (WLS) -- A soldier from Sullivan, Illinois has died while serving in Afghanistan.

Gerrick Smith, 19, died on Wednesday of a non-combat related injury.

Smith's National Guard unit out of Marion was deployed in December as part of the 33rd infantry brigade combat team.

Details about his death have not been released.

This was Smith's first deployment.
