A man is hospitalized in stable condition after Chicago police shot him Saturday night on the city's South Side.

Officers patrolling the area near the 8200-block of South Marquette Avenue say they saw a man standing on a porch with a weapon in his hand. They ordered him to drop it, but he reportedly fired in their direction.

Police returned fire, striking him.

After allegedly trying to flee, police say he then shot at officers a second time. Officers again returned fire, hitting him several times.

The man was taken into custody and to a hospital. He was last reported in stable condition.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
