(Washington, D.C. - WABC, February 1, 2007) -- Maytag has voluntarily recalled 2.3 million Maytag and Jenn-Air dishwashers because of a fire hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday.
Officials say liquid rinse-aid can leak from the dishwasher's dispenser and come in contact with the appliance's internal wiring, causing a short-circuit and fire.
There have been 135 reports of dishwasher fires, according to Maytag.
The machines were reportedly sold at stores nationwide between July 1997 and June 2001.
Maytag is offering either a free in-home repair or a $75 cash-back reimbursement with the purchase of a new Maytag-brand dishwasher.
