April 21, 2006 -- It's not money to burn -- but cash to flush. Police in a northern German city (Kiel) report a retiree flushed nearly 19-thousand dollars down the toilet
Officers said the elderly man believed the old German marks were worthless. He was wrong. While the Euro is now the accepted currency in many European countries, the old money can still be cashed-in at central banks.
Police report plumbers were able to extract much of the soggy loot from the blocked drain line. The man had even more cash in his apartment. Police accompanied the retiree to the bank, where he deposited his dough.
