August 2, 2013 (WLS) -- The 127 Yard Sale spanning 690 miles from Michigan to Alabama began Thursday and runs through Sunday.
The 127 Yard Sale is an annual event that begins on the first Thursday in August. The Sale begins five miles north of Addison, Michigan, and ends in Gadsen, Alabama.
The event began in 1987 in Jamestown, Tenn. when a local official planned the event to encourage travelers to bypass interstate highways such as I-40 and I-75 in favor of scenic routes. County officials created a list of 300 attractions along the original sale route in Kentucky and Tennessee.
Several years after The 127 Yard Sale began, Lookout Mountain Parkway was added, extending the route from Tennessee into Alabama. So where are the yard sales?
"In the front yards of people's homes, fields, pastures, on side streets along the route, in empty lots, at businesses, community parks, and town centers. Some areas will have large groups of vendors together, while others will be set up separately," the official website said.
The site recommends bringing flattened boxes in your car in case you run out of room for purchases, so you can ship them home.
