How to download eBooks from Chicago Public Library

July 2, 2012 (CHICAGO) -- Great summer reading suggestions for kids-- and they're available online for free from the Chicago Public Library.

Andrew Medlar is a youth reading specialist with the Chicago Public Library. He has some tips for going online to download eBooks.

• What's available? CPL has well over 14,000 e-book titles available for Chicagoans of all ages to select from, and that includes both e-books to read and also e-audiobooks. It most definitely includes popular books and series, both current bestsellers and classic favorites. What we're not able to include, however, are titles from those publishers who don't allow libraries to purchase their electronic editions at all, which includes big publishers such as Macmillan and Simon & Schuster.
• How to download an eBook: Start at chicagopubliclibrary.org, and right in the middle of the site is the word "eBooks". Click there and it will take you to our digital catalog where you can pick from the thousands of titles on hundreds of subjects and themes. Pick the format (eBook or eAudiobook), the device you want to use it on, quickly download the book access software and then the book, and in mere moments you're ready to go. We have online videos and guides to help first time and returning eBook users, as well as programs in the libraries where librarians can guide you through the process in person. Check "Events and Programs" on our same website or ask your favorite librarian for when the next one close to you will be.
• How long can you have an eBook? And how do you return it? Everybody can have up to 6 e titles checked out at a time and for up to 21 days, although most will let you choose an earlier date if you know you'll be done with it sooner and want to make it available to the next reader. When the due date arrives the content is returned automatically. You don't have to do anything and will never have overdue fines from eBooks.
