Some hotels cutting back on amenities

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Some hotel chains are cutting amenities to help offset a steep decline in reservations because of the recession.

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts are putting fewer towels in their rooms.

Courtyard and other Marriott hotel chains have stopped providing hand lotion for visitors.

Marriott is also telling some of its facilities to cut back on the fruit offered at breakfast buffets. Marriott's upscale Ritz-Carlton has stopped putting out fresh-cut flowers, and it has reduced operating hours for spas, restaurants and hotel shops.

Other hotels are offering incentives like free meals or spa treatments to boost reservations.

Industry analysts predict that operating income will be down 14 percent at US hotels in 2009.
