New laptop sells for $1 -- with a catch

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

If you're in the market for a new laptop computer, you can now purchase one for about a dollar.

Best Buy and Sprint have teamed up to allow consumers to purchase a Hewlett-Packard Compaq Mini NetBook for 99 cents.

There is a catch.

Customers have to sign a two-year mobile broadband contract with Sprint that limits users to 5 gigabytes of web data usage per month. Extra fees apply if that limit is exceeded.

The Compaq NetBook has a 10-inch screen, a built-in webcam, built-in Wi-Fi, an Intel Atom processor and Windows XP. It can be purchased without a contract for about $390.
