Toys R Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids offers help for parents

Sunday, November 18, 2012

The holiday season is here, and toys are always a favorite for children, including those with disabilities.

Toys R Us has a guide that recommends the best toys for children with different abilities.

For 17 years, the National Lekotek Center has been co-producing with Toys R Us for the "Toy Guide for Differently-abled Kids."

"I think it is very helpful because there are so many toys in Toys R Us that parents don't know where to start," said Ellen Metrick of the National Lekotek Center.

She says every item in the guide has been evaluated by their toy experts.

"We work with children who have disabilities, all types of disabilities, and we evaluate every product. And the ones that we feel are appropriate to be in the guide we write up the copy for the guide," said Metrick.

This year's top toys include:

"My first markers by Crayola. What 's nice about them is they have a whole hand grip so children are using a whole hand to draw with," Metrick said. "Illumination Station by Sassy has a suction cup base so wherever you place it, it will stay secure for that child."

"Catch Me Kate -- this is by Vtech -- and it works on movement," Metrick said.

Metrick also mentioned the Lalaloopsy Silly Hair doll and the Rainbow Bloom by Melissa and Doug, which works on physical skills. She also talked about Scrabble Flash for kids who have intellectual delays and Disco Light Karaoke, which works on language development. "

"This is 'A for Apple,' and it's by Tiger Tales, and each page has one letter, and it's grooved track," Metrick said.

Price range is anywhere from $3.50 to $57.

The most popular toy is the Roll and Play.

" There aren't very many toys for games for younger kidsm and this is one of the first games," said Metrick. "It works on subjects that they're interested in like emotions and numbers and animal sounds and colors."
