Naomi Campbell escapes charges in court, for now

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Model Naomi Campbell sashayed in and out of court in Lower Manhattan today as she continues to try to cut a plea deal.

The cell phone tossing model's hearing was adjourned, and her next court date was set for Sept. 27. Her lawyers are hoping this will give them and Campbell time to reduce the charges against her in a plea deal.

Prosecutors say as of now, Campbell faces up to seven years in prison and deportation if convicted on charges she tossed a cell phone at maid Ana Scolavino's head during a temper tantrum. Campbell was upset that she couldn't find a favorite pair of jeans and had allegedly accused the maid of stealing the missing clothing.

Scolavino has not testified before a grand jury since Campbell was arrested on assault charges in March.

But even if Campbell, a British citizen, cut a plea deal, she could still face a civil lawsuit.

Eyewitness News has learned meanwhile, Campbell was slapped with a lawsuit by another former maid, Gaby Gibson of Queens, who filed a civil suit in Manhattan Supreme Court seeking compensatory and punitive damages.
