Study shows prescription labels can be misunderstood

Wednesday, November 29, 2006

A study involving hundreds of patients found that almost half misunderstood one or more of the instructions on their prescription label.

That could result in serious over dosing and under dosing as well. According to the report in the Annals of Internal Medicine, one of the most common mistakes is confusing a teaspoon with a tablespoon.

Also, patients tend to misinterpret instructions involving the amount of pills that need to be taken each day.

Doctors say part of the problem is people are simply reading labels too fast. But, they also say labels need to be clearer.
