Non-controversial form of stem cell treatment could regenerate heart tissue
January 12, 2007 (WLS) -- We've been hearing a lot this week about stem cell research. The US House just passed a bill that would expand federally funded embryonic stem cell research, and there is the recent reports about stem cells found in amniotic fluid and placentas.
Embryonic stem cells are the subject of passionate debate but less controversial and still promising is research into adult stem cells.
Rush University Medical Center is conducting trials to see if a patient's own stem cell, directly injected into the heart, can create new blood vessels. Cardiologist Dr. Gary Schaer joined us Friday to talk about that and more.
Patients interested in participating in this trial can call Catherine Glase at (312) 942-8901 or look at the Rush website: www.rush.edu.
