Researchers say new flu shot is more kid-friendly

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

Researchers say there is a more kid-friendly solution to the flu shot.

The nasal vaccine marketed as FluMist is already available to adults and kids older than 5 years. Now a new study shows it is safe and effective for babies and very young children.

Doctors vaccinated more than 8,000 babies and young children and found the FluMist was better at protecting children from the flu than the usual shot. Children who got the FluMist vaccine were half as likely to get the flu, plus with no needle, it's an attractive alternative.

The study in the New England Journal of Medicine recommends this needle-free vaccine for children 1 year and older.
